Equipped with complex geometric camouflage and sensitive labial heat pits, this ambush predator can lie motionless for days awaiting unwary deer, pigs, or primates along river corridors. Powerful swimming capabilities enable crossing wide saltwater channels, allowing colonization of isolated archipelagos throughout Southeast Asia. Mature females demonstrate rare maternal investment by coiling tightly around egg clutches and rhythmically shivering their muscles to generate incubation heat.
