Burmese Python
Python bivittatusBurmese pythons are formidable constrictors and among the largest snakes on Earth, spending much of their time resting near water or camouflaged among dense vegetation. Females incubate their clutches of up to one hundred eggs by rhythmically shivering their muscles to generate heat, a rare form of maternal care among reptiles. In their introduced range across South Florida, these apex predators have dramatically altered wetlands ecology by severely depressing populations of native marsh rabbits, raccoons, and wading birds.

- Why it is dangerous
- Possesses rows of sharp, recurved teeth that inflict deep lacerations and has enough constriction power to asphyxiate large prey.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a tan or yellowish body marked with dark brown blotches resembling puzzle pieces and a distinct dark spearhead pattern on the head.

- Do not attempt to corner, capture, or handle wild individuals; back away slowly and give the snake space to retreat.
- What to notice
- Recognizable in native habitats by its massive girth, tan coloration, and dark brown, irregular rectangular blotches bordered in black.
- Support conservation
- In native habitats, avoid disturbing basking individuals and support local anti-poaching initiatives.

- Keep Distance: Maintain several meters of clearance, as adults can strike quickly over short distances.
