Bull sea lions dominate coastal rookeries with rumbling roars and massive manes that cushion against territorial clashes during the summer breeding season. Bachelor males frequently raid harems in coordinated bands, attempting to abduct females or create confusion to secure matings along the rocky margins. In the open ocean, these agile pinnipeds pursue schooling fish and squid through kelp forests, occasionally hunting cooperatively to herd prey against steep shoreline bluffs.
